A new director for the Flash film has been reported: David Dobkin, the director behind Fred Claus (apparently they're looking for a humorous spin for the film).

Shawn Levy was the previously announced director, but he left the project for reasons not disclosed. And, David Goyer was reported to be attached to the project beforehand, but he left also.

Dobkin also confirms that the movie will be set in the same universe as the upcoming JLA movie but will be released after the JLA movie itself. The film will reportedly feature Wally West as Flash.

Press Release: Zenescope Announces Willow Creek (10.28)

The following is a press release from Zenescope Entertainment.

Zenescope is proud to announce Willow Creek, a five issue mini-series featuring story by Denny Williams and Christian Beranek (Dracula vs. King Arthur, Se7en), with art by fan favorite Josh Medors (G.I. Joe, Chucky). It is set to debut in early January with a special #0 issue. Issue #1 will be out in stores later that month.

Set in a sleepy town in Northern California, Willow Creek presents a new origin story for the popular werewolf horror genre. Deacon McKay, a cop from the NYPD, takes a job back in the place where he grew up. After a series of murders, he uncovers the dark past of Willow Creek and comes face to face with his own demons.

Co-creators Denny Williams and Josh Medors came up with the original premise when they were teenagers. Critically acclaimed writer/producer Christian Beranek read the treatment, was intrigued and signed on soon later. He then went to the actual town of Willow Creek, CA to take reference photos and interview the locals.

"It's a very creepy place," says Beranek, known for the amount of research he puts into a project. "I was able to take a ton of great pics and get a vibe for the town. There is a lot of mystery there, being it's the self-proclaimed home of Bigfoot, and that is conveyed in the book."

"We're excited about the future of Willow Creek," says Zenescope President Joe Brusha. "Werewolves are back in a big way and this book is sure to entertain fans of lycanthrophy everywhere."

Issue #0 will be available in both a regular edition and as a special cover featuring original sketches by Medors and some of the best artists in the industry.

Wonder Woman Cast In Upcoming JLA Film (10.27)

That's right, they've chosen someone to play Wonder Woman in the upcoming JLA movie. She's an Australian actress named Teresa Palmer.

Is it just me, though, or is she too young and small for the role? She's only 21 and aruond 5' 5''.

The JLA movie (directed by George Miller) is aiming for a 2009 release date and is reportedly trying to rush the film so as to beat the feared writer's strikes.

Press Release: Comic Creators Take A Slice Out Of Dexter (10.27)

The following is a press release from the Hero Initiative.

Los Angeles, CA (October 26, 2007) -- The hit Showtime TV series DEXTER has started its second season at full speed, but this Sunday, the show adds a comic touch. The October 28 episode titled “The Dark Defender” will feature cameo appearances by comic writer Dan Wickline (30 Days of Night: Spreading the Disease ) and comic artist Tone Rodriguez (The Simpsons Treehouse of Horror )…and one of them doesn't make it through alive.

The idea of adding these two creative friends was the brainchild of series writer Tim Schlattman, who's witnessed Dan and Tone's acidic yet friendly banter first hand. Tim pitched an episode with characters loosely based on the two, and when his concept was green-lit, then suggested using the actual men who inspired the idea. Wickline and Rodriguez will play-you guessed it-two comic creators.

“I'm glad they asked us, and it was a great experience,” said Tone Rodriguez. “I'm sure if they want us back, at least the one that lives, we'd be happy to return.”

Dan Wickline also enjoyed his experience, and had an interesting time with “Dexter” actor Michael C. Hall: “He was joking around with production assistants, and just seemed like a great guy to hang out with,” Wickline said. “Then on the set, he goes from 'Friendly Dexter' to 'Killer Dexter' with just a look…and I felt just a touch scared.”

Besides the cameos, Tone Rodriguez also provided art that will be featured prominently in the episode.

And YOU can bring home a little of the Dexter experience as well. One of the Wickline/Rodriguez characters dies in the episode, and without saying who (you can find out for yourself this Sunday), you can own one of their last personal effects. A bloody shirt (not real blood, just prop blood, we promise!) worn by the “victim” is being auctioned off via eBay.com with proceeds benefiting The Hero Initiative, the charity that helps older comic creators in medical or financial need. The shirt will be autographed by both Dan Wickline and Tone Rodriguez and is available for auction at:
http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQsassZheroinitiative

“Dexter: The Dark Defender” will debut Sunday, October 28th on Showtime.

October 22nd, 2007

Fort Worth, TX - October 22, 2007 -- FUNimation Entertainment announced today that the company's Witchblade volume one release is the best-selling anime home entertainment release to date in 2007.

According to analysis of Nielsen VideoScan data after its September 25th release date, Witchblade volume 1 is the #1 best selling anime series launch of the year based on first week sales. Nielsen VideoScan collects sell-through POS (consumer purchase) sales data weekly from traditional channels of video distribution including mass merchants, audio/video and video specialty retailers, electronics outlets, grocery stores, drug stores, and some Internet sites. Nielsen VideoScan maintains this weekly POS data in one of the largest databases of VHS and DVD products in the country.

From the renowned anime studio GONZO, Witchblade is the saga of a woman who must bear the burden of a terrible force of destruction known as the Witchblade. Based on the comic book series from Top Cow Productions, the anime series goes into the future to tell the tale of a new bearer of the Witchblade and the conspiracy that surrounds her burden. Witchblade is the first U.S. comic book property to be made into an anime.

Press Release: Witchblade TPB To Have Low Price, Increased Page Count, Painted Cover! (10.24)

The following is a press release from Top Cow Comics.

In January 2008, Top Cow Productions will give new and lapsed readers and retailers an opportunity to rediscover Witchblade, the ongoing flagship title for the publisher. Top Cow will be re-branding the entire trade paperback line for Witchblade and unveiled the first trade cover today as well as a page count increase.

Witchblade Volume 1 is slated for release in January 2008 and will contain the initial storyline by current series writer, Ron Marz (First Born, Samurai: Heaven & Earth) entitled “Witch Hunt.” The six issue story is an ideal jumping point for readers interested in discovering the modern Witchblade series. The first volume collects Witchblade #80-85 written by Marz and drawn by Mike Choi (X-Men, X-23: Target X). Subsequent volumes will follow with volumes 2-4 being released in the first half of 2008. The new trade collections will feature a redesigned trade dress, brand new painted covers by upcoming Witchblade ongoing artist Stjepan Sejic (First Born), new introductions, and a new Witchblade logo by Eisner award-winner Todd Klein. Most noteworthy will be Top Cow’s aggressive introductory pricing for Volume 1, available exclusively in comic shops for only $4.99. The book market version will carry the regular $9.99 SRP on the cover.

Top Cow revealed for the first time today the new painted cover for Volume 1 by Stjepan Sejic featuring the iconic Witchblade gauntlet itself. The publisher also announced a page count increase to 160 pages with no increase in price. Earlier volumes of Witchblade containing the classic stories by David Wohl, Christina Z., and Michael Turner, will be re-branded as Witchblade: Origins and offered beginning in the second quarter of 2008. Witchblade: Origins will consist of four volumes and collect Witchblade #1-25.

“The Witch Hunt storyline was really my introduction to Witchblade as a writer, and I wrote it to be an introduction for the readers as well,” commented author Marz. “The arc is very much a ground-floor read, so the collection should be a serve as a great starting point at an amazing price. I don't think you can get much more new-reader friendly than that."

“With over 100 issues of Witchblade out there it can be intimidating for new fans to try out the series,” commented Filip Sablik, Vice President of Marketing & Sales for Top Cow. “By re-branding the trade program we’re letting fans and retailers know, this is the place to jump on board. The Ron Marz run on Witchblade has been one of the best reviewed in the history of the title.”

“Marz has cut away the fat without destroying the history.” Grade A – Paperback Reader

“The Witchblade-verse is at its most newbie-friendly point in years.” 4 Out of 5 – Silver Bullet Comics

“Don’t be intimidated by this series having over 100 issues so far. Now is as good a time as any to get on board.” Grade A – Judgement Day, Comic World News

“There is no greater accomplishment for a writer than leaving a reader wanting more, and I want more. Witchblade is highly recommended.” – Suspended Animation

Press Release: Presenting Doctor Grordbort's Contrapulatronic Dingus Directory (10.24)

The following is a press release from Dark Horse Comics.

Weta Publishing is pleased to announce its upcoming Weta Originals/Dark Horse Comics publication: Doctor Grordbort's Contrapulatronic Dingus Directory.

Doctor Grordbort: inventor extraordinaire! He's got a gadget for everything! He's also the creator of a meticulous catalogue of weaponry. Doctor Grordbort's Contrapulatronic Dingus Directory is a thirty-two-page catalogue that chronicles a world where chivalry is not dead, advertising is beautiful, and ray guns look too pretty to be lethal.

The stars of the show are, of course, Doctor Grordbort's Infallible Aether Oscillators, but you will also find the shiniest new bifurnilizers, metal manservants, and automated travel loungers. Also included for entertainment and scientific education is a compartmentalised picture story (some call them comics) of the world-famous naturalist, Lord Cockswain. He was the hit of this year's Comic-Con International in San Diego, as convention-goers stopped agape at Weta's hauntingly realistic, life-size memorial statue, celebrating Lord Cockswain and the Moon Mistress' heroic endeavors on Venus.

Written and illustrated by Weta Workshop conceptual designer Greg Broadmore, Doctor Grordbort's Contrapulatronic Dingus Directory showcases dozens of arcane inventions, contraptions, and weaponry. "As a kid I was massively inspired and awed by the black-and-white serials on Sunday afternoon TV, in particular the 1930s Flash Gordon and the many sci-fi movies of that era," says Greg. "This book allowed me to pay homage to that world of science fiction and create something new at the same time. And it's full of guns, did I mention guns? Rayguns actually, the best type."

Press Release: Darkman Is Back! (10.21)

The following is a press release from Dynamite Entertainment.

October 19, 2007 Runnemede, NJ - DYNAMITE ENTERTAINMENT today has released images and information announcing the December release of Darkman #1, the debut issue of an all-new comic book series inspired by the original Sam Raimi film!

Producer Ford Lytle Gilmore is joined by artist Tommy Smith and cover artists Tomm Coker and Fabiano (Army of Darkness) Neves for this all new comic book event! Taking place five years after the events of the first film, the all-new Dynamite series promises to remain faithful, as well as standing on its own to entice and intrigue new readers!

Fans of both Raimi and Darkman know the story of Peyton Westlake and his tragic transformation into the man known as Darkman. Now, Peyton Westlake has fled town in his attempts to distance himself from Julie, all while continuing his research; his obsession with his lost love was greater than his obsession with perfecting his synthetic skin, and he found himself unable to stay away. Now, he's returned to a find world quite different than the one he left behind....

"I've long thought that DARKMAN was one of the greatest comic book movies ever made, even if it wasn't actually based on a comic book.  Peyton Westlake is a very real, very flawed, very human character living in this over-the-top world. When Nick told me what Dynamite was doing with the ‘Army of Darkness' crossover and how they wanted to do an ongoing series building upon that, it was hard to pass up the opportunity to be a part of it." -- Ford Gilmore

"When I was a kid, I saw Darkman when it came out theaters. It was the first Sam Raimi movie I saw, and I've been a fan of his ever since. Equal parts horror and pulp hero, Darkman is going to be a blast to work on. He has loads of potential as a tragic hero, alongside the likes of Frankenstein, Dr. Jekyll, Batman, and the Hulk. I'm grateful for Nick and Dynamite Entertainment for giving me the opportunity to illustrate his adventures, and to Ford for writing a killer story." --Tommy Smith

"Darkman is a rich character, as he's one of the most ‘human' super-heroes we've ever seen on screen.  We've previously worked on the character with the Army of Darkness cross-over, which is helping to "bridge" the story Ford is preparing for the new series - building on what cross-over mini writers Kurt Busiek and Roger Stern helped to set up. It all leads to a big reveal at the end of issue #1!" -- Nick Barrucci

Also, fans of Darkman should ask their retailer about the special "Foil" edition of Darkman #1.

Press Release: Dark Horse Announces Spooky New Toys (10.19)

The following is a press release from Dark Horse Comics.

    By David Scroggy

It's October, and that means it's a great time to tell you all about a bunch of spooky products that are on the horizon.

We have fallen in love with Roman Dirge's cute little dead girl, and are exhuming her in a definitive series of figures. Although you won't actually see them until Valentine's Day next year, we thought that Halloween was a good time to let you know they are coming.

We are speaking of the definitive 8" vinyl figure of Lenore. Creator Roman Dirge has proclaimed it his favorite Lenore figure ever! He was so thrilled that he even created all-new original art for the packaging. Thanks, Roman.

If you haven't read the dark adventures of this young lady, we refer you to the best-selling comics and graphic novels published by our pals at SLG. Go to their web site at: www.slgcomic.com and search for "Lenore." Tell 'em Dark Horse sent you.

For our part, we also are preparing a second Lenore boxed set of pvc figures to be released in conjunction with the large vinyl. These items join our currently-available Lenore PVC Set #1, journal, stationery and Zippo® lighter. All are officially licensed from the estimable Mr. Dirge.

You can place advance orders with your favorite retailer via Diamond Comic Distributors, or pre-order online at: tfaw.com.

Stay spooky and beware the "dark muffins."

Also "under the radar" is a new statue of one of the comic book arena's most macabre master of ceremonies- Uncle Creepy. Watch for this new piece in an upcoming issue of Diamond's Previews magazine.

And just to round out your jolly October, take a trip to hell. When you get there, you'll be greeted by none other than Hell's Proprietor brainchild of top modern artist Glenn Barr.

This ambitious and huge (11") vinyl figure is available November in two editions, brown (only 1,000 copies produced) and blue (only 500 copies produced). It joins our Chinese "Qee" version of Mike Mignola's Hellboy in our new program of limited-edition designer art toys.

This exciting genre is one of the most exciting new areas of collecting, and our entrance to the field is just right for the spooky season!

TESHKEEL COMICS’ THE 99 MAKES US DEBUT

International comic book phenomenon debuts in US market

New York City, October 17, 2007 – Teshkeel Comics announced today that its first superhero series, THE 99, has arrived in US comic book stores nationwide. The US debut follows a high profile marketing campaign and months of industry buzz regarding the successful international property. THE 99 #1 kicks off a regular US monthly series, featuring action-packed superhero adventures and a positive cultural message.

“This is truly a remarkable time for our company,” said Teshkeel’s US publisher Sven Larsen. “Our writer and ‘Visionary-in-Chief,’ Dr. Naif Al-Mutawa has been carrying around the story of THE 99 characters since 2004. At the time, our heroes were just names in black type on plain blank paper. Now they are full-fledged characters with amazing visuals and unique personalities. We've seen THE 99 grow into a worldwide phenomenon that has caught the attention of everyone from The New York Times to the BBC. Now, we couldn’t be more excited for our monthly US launch, and for American readers to meet and follow our expanding cast of heroes.”

THE 99 are the world's first superhero team based on Islamic culture and history. Each member of the THE 99 multinational team wields a power derived from one of the ancient Noor Stones, which were thought to be lost in ancient times. In all, there will be 99 characters from 99 different countries, reflecting a broad array of cultures and beliefs. The monthly series depicts their struggles against those who would use the Noor Stones for evil, and their own challenges in understanding each other.

“THE 99 is a different type of comic book series,” explained series creator and Teshkeel CEO Dr. Naif Al-Mutawa. “I wanted to create positive role models for readers that reflected the diversity and globalism of our modern world. I also wanted to create a different type of team dynamic and show that things like teamwork, understanding different cultures, and communication were just as important as physical strength or other ‘super-powers.’ THE 99 may look like traditional superheroes but how they think and act is quite different.”

“We’ve tried to ground the stories a little more in the real world,” added series co-writer Fabian Nicieza (who has worked on numerous comics including X-Men and Superman). “But that doesn’t mean that there won’t be plenty of action and excitement. We’re working with a historical background and loads of new environments that many American readers will be exposed to for the first time. It’s what attracted me to the project as a writer and I’m sure it’s going to attract a lot of readers as well.”

Series artist John McCrea, whose credits include Superman and Spider-Man, added, “The energy and excitement of THE 99 is what makes the project appealing to me. I've been able to create the look of the universe from the word ‘go,’ based around the amazing designs of Dan Panosian, and it’s been a lot of fun and a real creative challenge. Also, from day to day I have no idea where I'll be headed next, both within the globetrotting stories and within Teshkeel itself, as I am working on character designs, animation turnarounds, posters, as well as the regular monthly book. My head is spinning!”

“As someone who grew up with Western comic books like Archie and Spider-Man, it’s exciting for me to see Teshkeel make its own contribution to the medium,” concluded Al- Mutawa. “It’s one of the first times Middle Eastern popular culture has come to the US (rather than the other way around). I’m looking forward to hearing the reactions of American readers and seeing Jabbar and Noora take their place alongside the likes of Batman and The Hulk in American comic book stores. The launch of our new US monthly series marks another important point in our company’s development and our mission to deliver THE 99’s positive message around the world.”

THE 99 series is being distributed in the United States to thousands of comic book specialty shops, via Diamond Comic Distributors, the world's largest distributor of English-language comics and related merchandise. Diamond provides a Comic Shop Locator Service, searchable by US ZIP code on http://csls.diamondcomics.com/ or by calling 1-888-COMIC-BOOK (1-888-266-4226).

Press Release: Youngblood Returns As An Ongoing! (10.15)

The following is a press release from Image Comics.

October 15th, 2007 (Berkeley, CA) - Rob Liefeld's return to Image dominated the buzz this past summer and now you can finally see the results in this January's YOUNGBLOOD #1!

"YOUNGBLOOD is the book which launched the Image invasion and eventually spawned THE ULTIMATES and AUTHORITY," said writer Joe Casey. "It's only right it's back at home and I'm extremely thrilled Rob has entrusted his creations to series artist Derek Donovan and me. Derec and I are bringing back everything fans loved about the series, but in a whole new style set for the fans of today."

A new administration reunites series originals like Shaft, Badrock, Die Hard and Cougar alongside newer creations including Johnny Panic, Doc Rocket and one never-before-seen character! The ongoing is set to fuse modern sensibilities and the original series' over-the-top excitement as our team learns darker forces are behind their reunion. In addition, creator Rob Liefeld will be providing variant covers for each issue of the series.

Image Comics Publisher Erik Larsen said, "Having Rob and YOUNGBLOOD under the Image banner is the way things should be. Rob's passion behind the book embodies the purpose of Image: creators owning the work they hold most dear. Besides, it's a thrill to have him and the whole YOUNGBLOOD crew signing alongside me!"

YOUNGBLOOD #1 (NOV072009), a 32-page full color comic priced at $2.99, will be available in stores January 9th.

Press Release: Paul Grist Superhero Classic Goes Monthly (10.26)

The following is a press release from Image Comics.

BERKELEY, CA (October 12th, 2007) - Paul Grist's acclaimed superhero series, JACK STAFF, goes monthly starting with January's JACK STAFF SPECIAL #1.

"I've longed to put out JACK STAFF monthly for a long time," Grist said. "Luckily, I wasn't alone as Image's Executive Director, Eric Stephenson, has wanted the same thing. We've been working together to make it happen for awhile now and I'm happy to say we already have three issues in the can with a fourth right on its heels."

JACK STAFF made its debut through Grist's own publishing house, Dancing Elephant Press, but it didn't take long into his twelve issue run to catch Stephenson's interest. The book was soon relaunched under Image and introduced a new fanbase to Jack Staff and his massive supporting cast including the Freedom Fighters, Sgt. States, Tom Tom the Robot Man and Becky Burdock: Vampire Reporter. JACK STAFF SPECIAL #1 will catch up the uninitiated and provide the perfect jumping on point to February's JACK STAFF #14.
